Henry Hill collection, 1808-1839.

Consists of correspondence and documents relating to Hill's commission as United States Consul in St. Salvador in Brazil. The first letter of his appointment is dated May 3, 1808 and signed by James Madison explaining Hill's plan of departure. Subsequent letters and documents contain details about Hill's Consular instructions. They include his passport, which is written on vellum, signed by President James Madison and dated March 7, 1809. Also included are printed circulars from the Department of State regarding the Consular uniform, expenditures on the Public Account, and statements of accounts of Henry Hill. Other correspondents include Daniel Brent, John Graham, and Stephen Pleasonton.
